CENTRE MANAGER, CHARLIE, TAKES ON THE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

Our Centre Manager, Charlie, recently took his climbing skills and used them to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge. Charlie took on the challenge alongside a group of former Clip ’n Climb Cambridge staff members who put their experience into practice.

The challenge involved conquering three of the UK’s most famous mountains: Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and MT. Snowdon. Sensibly, the group paced themselves well, taking on one mountain per day.

Charlie’s challenge started with Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, located in Scotland, with its summit sitting at 1345m above sea level. Off to a strong start, the group completed Ben Nevis in 6 hours and 10 minutes.

Charlie said:

‘Nevis was the hardest mentally as the weather was so miserable, it rained heavily for like 80% of the walk.’

Next up, the group took on Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain with an elevation of 978m. Despite tiredness and aching creeping in after having climbed Ben Nevis the previous day, the team achieved an incredible time of 4 hours and 32 minutes.

Charlie said:

‘Physically I would say Scafell was the hardest, especially with having done Nevis around 10 hours before. The steepness mixed with going the wrong way for about 45 mins was an absolute killer.’

The final climb was MT Snowdon, found in Wales peaking at 1085m. With 6 different paths to choose from, the group decided to take the Llanberis path up (easy and gradual but the longest), and the miners track down (steep, strenuous and full of loose rock). The team pushed through, finding enough energy to finish strong with a time of 4 hours and 27 minutes.

Overall, Charlie said:

‘Snowdon gave the best views. Scafell was my favourite as once we corrected our route, we had clearly gone the wrong way which had us all in stitches.’

Reaching the summit of all three mountains in a combined time of 15 hours and 9 minutes, is a huge achievement for our Centre Manager Charlie, and everyone involved.
